Discourses on God Talks With Arjuna: The Bhagavad Gita

The entire knowledge of the cosmos is packed into the Gita. . . . [it] has been understood and applied on all levels of human endeavour . . . . Wherever one is on the way back to God, the Gita will shed its light on that segment of the journey.

— Paramahansa Yogananda

Join senior sannyasis from YSS in exploring the spiritual teachings of the beloved Indian scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, through inspirational discourses based on Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda’s interpretation of the scripture in ‘God Talks With Arjuna’. Covering a range of topics related to spiritual life, these discourses offer valuable insight and wisdom to deepen your understanding of the Gita.

Winning the Battle of Life (Kurukshetra Within Me): Parts I-V

This is a series of inspirational talks on the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita as it has been interpreted by Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda in God Talks With Arjuna, the great Guru’s divinely inspired translation of and extensive commentary on this beloved scripture. The speaker Swami Smaranananda Giri, interprets Paramahansa Yogananda’s commentary on Slokas I to IX of Chapter I explaining through analogies and anecdotes how the presence of Kauravas (bad tendencies) within us impedes our spiritual progress and how nurturing the Pandavas (good tendencies) within us will eventually bring about the defeat of those Kauravas in the inner battle of Kurukshetra, thus leading to the attainment of the ultimate goal of Self-realization.

Winning the Battle of Life

Description

This is the first in a series of discourses by Swami Smaranananda Giri, talking about the symbolic significance of the Kurukshetra war.

Swami Smaranananda delves into Paramahansaji’s commentary, explaining through analogies and anecdotes, how the presence of Kauravas (bad tendencies) within us impedes our spiritual progress and how nurturing the Pandavas (good tendencies) within us will eventually bring about the defeat of those Kauravas in the inner battle of Kurukshetra, thus leading to the attainment of the ultimate goal of Self-realization.

The Conch Shells in Kurukshetra Battle — Inner Vibratory Battle in Meditation: Part I-II

In these discourses, Swami Smaranananda interprets Paramahansa Yogananda’s commentary on Slokas XII to XIX of Chapter I of the Bhagavad Gita, God Talks With Arjuna. He delves into the symbolic significance of the blowing of the conch shells at the beginning of the Kurukshetra battle and its relevance to the inner psychological battle of a meditating yogi.

A meditating yogi’s consciousness is torn between opposing forces: on one side, physical and astral vibratory sounds of the senses pull the consciousness towards the body; whereas on the other, the astral music of the inner discriminative powers and vital activities in the spinal centres draw the consciousness towards the soul and Spirit.

Conch Shells in the Kurukshetra Battle

Description

This is the first talk in a two-part series titled “The Conch Shells in Kurukshetra Battle: Inner Vibratory Battle in Meditation” by Swami Smaranananda Giri, a senior YSS sannyasi.

He delves into the blowing of the conch shells to mark the start of the Kurukshetra battle. The discourse beautifully illustrates how the vibrations of the conch shells relate to the inner psychological battle of a meditating yogi.

The Timeless and Universal Message

This Bhagavad Gita that I offer to the world, God Talks With Arjuna, is a spiritual commentary of the communion that takes place between the omnipresent Spirit (symbolized by Krishna) and the soul of the ideal devotee (represented by Arjuna). I arrived at the spiritual understanding expressed in these pages by attunement with Vyasa.

— Paramahansa Yogananda

Paramahansa Yoganandaji, the author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, interprets the Bhagavad Gita with divine insight. In his interpretation, exploring its psychological, spiritual, and metaphysical depths — from the subtle causes of everyday thoughts and actions to the grand design of the cosmic order — Yoganandaji presents a sweeping chronicle of the soul’s journey to enlightenment.

Clearly outlining the Gita’s balanced path of meditation and right activity, Paramahansaji shows how we can create for ourselves a life of spiritual integrity, serenity, simplicity, and joy. Through our awakened intuition, we come to know the right course to take at every crossroad on the path of life, to determine what shortcomings are holding us back and what positive qualities are moving us forward, and to recognize and avoid pitfalls along the way.
